Press release ‘Buttershaw school junior Basketball Academy, Bradford Telegraph and Argus 17/9/08’
Youngsters on track for sports success
Young athletes at a secondary school are on a fast track to sporting stardom – thanks to a pioneering new scheme. Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College has become the first school in the district to start its own Sports Academy. More than 50 pupils aged between 11 and 18 – all with recognised talents in a range of sports including hockey, rugby, basketball, gymnastics and swimming – have been selected to become members. Each will receive top-flight coaching in their particular field, represent the school in competition and act as role models for pupil peers. Yvonne Anderson, the school’s director of sport, said: “The main aim of the academy is to identify elite sport students, try to help motivate them in their fields and allow them to act as role models. Pupils are only allow-ed to join the academy if they are very competent at sport in one or a range of areas, but they also have to have good attendance and behaviour and meet academic targets.” As part of developing its own Sports Academy – Butter-shaw has also become a Centre of Excellence for basketball. Bradford’s premier team, the Bradford Dragons, now trains at the school, which re-opened in a state-of-the-art £26 million development at the start of the month. As part of the link-up about 50 Buttershaw pupils are being taught the key skills needed to play the game during rigorous hour-long training sessions each morning from 7.30am. Academy members can also take advantage of new equipment at the school including a range of gyms and fitness suites, a climbing wall, a large sports hall, an astro-turf pitch and a specially-built mountain bike course set to be launched in the coming weeks. A trained physio is on hand to ensure the youngsters are kept in peak condition. Talented hockey play Nick Wright, 15, hopes to represent England at the 2016 Olympics. Despite his relative youth Nick already represents the Bradford, West Yorkshire and Yorkshire men’s sides. He said: “The new facilities mean I can bring my hockey stick to school and practise every day. I can also keep fit at the school gym and work with the physio. “The Sports Academy and the new school make us all feel proud of being at Buttershaw. Since moving to the new school pupils seem more mature and better-behaved.” Steve Ward, director of the academy, said: “Since we launched the academy I have been asked by many parents how their children can join. “We have already made the link with the Dragons and plan to make more with professional sides. Certainly in basketball I want the school to be recognised as the top school in Yorkshire. “For too long Buttershaw has been stuck with the stigma of catering for children from a rough estate. But we have fantastic children here who have achieved great things and they will now be even better.”INTERNATIONAL BASKETBALL-TOURNAMENTS
