Yorkshire Basketball Team Struggles In Regional Tournament
A combination of a nervous start and stiff competition from the other regions meant that the Yorkshire under 14 team struggled in last weekend's inter-regional tournament.
Overall the record of played 5, won 1, lost 4 does not make impressive reading. However beneath those figures lay some fine individual and team performances, particularly against the North West region, the eventual winners of the tournament.
Although the final result against the North West was a 34 – 41 loss the game hung in the balance until the final minute, when a defensive slip allowed a quick score that sealed the victory.
A second loss against the South East was brought about in the last second of the game. The Yorkshire boys held a two point lead with seconds on the clock, when the opposition threw up a desperation shot from deep in the court, which unfortunately went in and left the team with a one point loss.
One objective of the tournament is to allow the England coaches to select a group of outstanding players, who will form the basis of an England squad. Devon van Oostrum a TeamSpirit Sheffield Junior Sharks player, who performed well throughout the weekend was selected as a member of this elite group.
Scorers for 4 games:
Adam Carling 18; Anton Smith 2; Berhe Tesfayhonnes 5; Devon van Oostrum 33; Steve Lowka 40; George Colwill 25; Stuart Hughes 4; Alex Knight 8; James Chester 24; Karl Sleightholme 0
